Antonio Loriente "Angela" Flame Maple Guitar

The Loriente line is made in Valencia, Spain, completely by hand using
traditional techniques.  No shortcuts.  With focus on current high standards
for intonation, volume, and balance.  Materials are first class.  Each top is
selected from precisely quartered wood.  The backs and sides are selected
for beauty and acoustic quality.

This guitar, the Angela, marks a departure from the usual rosewood, with
back and sides of flamed maple.  As a violinmaker, I really appreciate the
acoustic qualities of maple in a guitar.  As a trained classical guitarist, I
appreciate the playing and performance character of this particular guitar
very much. I’m tempted to keep it.

According to the folks at Tornavoz, the Angela is “very clear, with plenty of
concert volume, the sound is more intimate and romantic - perfect for 19th
century and early 20th century repertoire.”  They’re correct in that, but
their few words hardly capture the subtle, sweet, somewhat melancholy,
rather haunting tone up the fingerboard a bit.  I’d tend to capo it all the
time, just for that sweet, lush sadness.  Intimate is right.  If there was a
guitar made for seduction, this is it.  I’m already smitten!  The French
polished soundboard allows the top to resonate with greater freedom,
producing a harmonically rich and complex tone.

A reviewer commented (search the web - you’ll find the review) “you can
hear a distinct mid rande frequency ‘glow instantly – which I would have to
attribute to the maple back/sides.  It sounds absolutely wonderful. I was
struck by the great volume of this guitar when I first played it. I could really
feel it vibrating against my chest. It definitely has concert worthy volume.
The guitar sounds very "open" yet focused somehow. The mid range is
super silky. It has tons of overtones coming out of it as well.”

I have to agree with this review.  The intonation sounds dead on to me, and
I just want to keep playing it.  Very true, very balanced, nice projection.  I
like.

The Loriente folks seem to know precisely what they’re doing.  With this
guitar they’re producing something with special appearance and a special
sound, with the playability and tone of a master luthier guitar in a
production package.  And the Protege Humicase - well, I want one, too.
